Our Story
The Living Legacy
Our story began long before this digital space. It was shaped by generations of resilience, resourcefulness, and traditions carried forward through family.
On my mother’s side stood my Great-Grandfather, a Spanish-American War veteran and Buffalo Soldier, followed by generations who carried their own traditions of strength and self-reliance.
That lineage included my Great-Uncle Alvin, a third-generation herbalist, the son of a freed slave, and a man known in his community as “The Herb Doctor.” His knowledge of herbs was vast. He wrote about herbal medicine, shared his knowledge with others, and served his community through plants and traditional remedies.
Family oral history tells of Uncle Alvin lecturing at Cornell University, a reflection of the depth of knowledge he carried and the respect he earned.
Uncle Alvin lived to be 100 years old, but his longevity was only one part of his remarkable life. His greater legacy was the herbal knowledge he preserved, practiced, and passed on.
On my father’s side, he carried the herbal traditions of his Gullah Geechee heritage. Raising six children in Michigan without medical insurance, he relied on plant knowledge, kitchen remedies, and traditional practices he had learned during his own upbringing.
Two different family lines. Two distinct histories. One tradition they shared: herbal medicine as part of everyday life.
Today, I carry both of those influences forward through Root N Rhythm Herbal, honoring the knowledge that came before me while helping ensure it continues into the generations ahead.
